Mayor’s choice in Lt. Governor's race may come Tuesday

Mayor Gavin Newsom is expected to make a decision as early as Tuesday about whether he will run for California lieutenant governor.

On Friday, Newsom said he would take the three-day weekend to consider the post. If he jumps into the race, he would be up against front-runners Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn and state Sen. Dean Florez of Shafter in the Democratic primary.

“A lot of people are calling me and asking me to run,” Newsom said Friday, admitting he had an “ember of interest.”

Tuesday is the last day candidates can file ballot statements. However, they have until March 12 to officially declare their candidacy for the statewide office.
