As evidenced by the latest Forbes 400 list, people around the Bay bring home a lot of pay.

Of the 400 richest people in America, more than 10 percent — 44 — reside in the Bay Area, according to the financial magazine’s latest listing of money-earners.

Oracle Corp. co-founder Larry Ellison tops the mark among Bay Area residents with an estimated net worth of $27 billion. Ellison, the third-richest person in the nation behind Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, came out ahead of Google’s twin titans, Sergey Brin and Larry Page, who, at $15 billion each, were the Bay Area’s second- and third-wealthiest citizens.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, worth $6.9 billion, was the fourth-richest Bay Area resident and 35th-wealthiest person in America. Zuckerberg and his Facebook comrade Dustin Moskovitz, who’s worth $1.4 billion, were the youngest Bay Area residents in the top 400, with both billionaires just 26 years old.

There were plenty of familiar local faces on Forbes’ elite list this year. Apple founder and i-everything purveyor Steve Jobs is worth $6.1 billion, good for 42nd on the list of Americans; Marin resident and fantasy world creator George Lucas squeaked into the nation’s top 100 at the 97th spot with a net value of $3.25 billion; Gap matriarch Doris Fisher placed 159th with a worth of $2.3 billion; and former eBay chief and gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman, she of the $119 million campaign-spending tab, came in 332nd with a value of $1.2 billion.

Despite donating $28 billion through his charity, Microsoft founder Gates maintained his perch atop America’s wealthiest for the 17th straight year with a net value of $54 billion. Financial guru Buffett came in second at $45 billion. At $24 billion, Wal-Mart heir Christy Walton is the richest woman in the country, and her total ranks her fourth overall.
