A kite surfer was at a local hospital Sunday evening after being pulled from the waters off San Francisco’s Ocean Beach earlier in the day by National Park Service rescue rangers who spotted the man in distress, a spokeswoman for the Golden Gate National Recreation Area said.

At about 2:35 p.m., the rangers entered the water to get the kite surfer, who had signaled he was in distress, spokeswoman Alexandra Picavet said.

The victim, a man from Kings Beach, a town near Lake Tahoe, had gotten tangled up in his equipment, Picavet said.

When the rangers reached him, he was face down in the water and not responsive, she said.

He was taken back to shore where CPR was administered until an ambulance arrived to take him to UCSF Medical Center, according to Picavet.

She did not know the man’s condition as of 5:15 p.m.
