Caltrans is getting ready for the Labor Day weekend closure of the eastbound deck of the Bay Bridge — and urging drivers to do the same.
The lower deck of the Bay Bridge will be closed to all traffic from 11:59 p.m. on Friday until 5 a.m. Tuesday while crews work on the westbound deck. Caltrans spokesman Bart Ney said officials chose Labor Day weekend because there were no major events going on in The City.
"There were no large regional events going on like we see planned in the coming months," he said. "It seemed like the best conceivable time to do it."
Officials also said the Labor Day weekend closure would keep the agency from having to close it for two weekends.
Workers will tear down a 1,000-foot span of the upper deck through the South of Market area. Caltrans will also realign the westbound approach at the Fremont Street exit where, starting Thursday, only two lanes will exit and four will continue straight ahead. Ney said he does not expect confused commuters to cause delays because of the lane changes.
"I think it will ease traffic flow," he said. "It’s much more intuitive."
The weekend’s closures will be the last eastbound closure for a year, according to Ney, and it will be the last "big impact" work done on the western approach. The eastbound approach was last closed in June.
