More than 100 drunk drivers have been stopped and arrested in the past two weeks in San Francisco as part of the Avoid the 8 campaign.

The campaign, which brings multiple law enforcement agencies together to catch drivers under the influence, held three DUI check points since Aug. 20. The campaign continues through midnight Sept. 6.

The campaigns typically happen around holidays where the majority of people celebrate by drinking, according to Avoid the 8 spokeswoman Jan Ford

Ford said 102 people suspected of drinking and driving have been arrested since Aug. 20. Though the exact number of people arrested over the same period last year was not available, she said overall, the number of drunk drivers on Bay Area roads is decreasing.

“We’re hoping people are getting the message,” she said. “It’s much easier to educate people not to drink and drive than arrest them one by one.”

The San Francisco Police Department, California Highway Patrol, U.S. Park Police, Alcohol and Beverage Control, San Francisco City College Police and San Francisco University Police, participated in the Avoid campaign.
