City Attorney Dennis Herrera officially announced his run for San Francisco mayor Friday.

City Attorney Dennis Herrera officially announced his run for San Francisco mayor Friday morning in a blast to his Facebook followers.

Herrera’s run for the office comes as little surprise. He is the second prominent politician behind Supervisor Bevan Dufty to announce his intentions.

The timing of the announcement comes as Herrera won an appeal against Supervisor Michela Alioto-Pier in what has widely been seen as a political victory as well as a legal one.

Herrera filed his intent to run Thursday, according to the Department of Elections. He chose to make the announcement on Facebook and his campaign website.

The office could be vacated by Mayor Gavin Newsom in January if Newsom becomes California’s next lieutenant governor, but the Board of Supervisors would pick the interim mayor. Otherwise, the election will be in November 2011.
