Still no leads in mysterious Excelsior homicide

SAN FRANCISCO — The family of the 49-year-old victim is reaching out for help in what they call an unexplainable murder.

San Francisco native and Excelsior resident Eric Buschman was unloading his pickup truck with a friend in front of his home after a camping trip to Lake Shasta when a man came up to him and fatally stabbed him. The killing happened in a matter of seconds, according to police.

The suspect is described as a “chubby” Hispanic man between 20 and 25 years old, standing 5 feet 4 inches and weighing 150 pounds. He was wearing a black, hooded sweatshirt and dark pants.

The man was last seen running from the area northbound on Athens Street and then west on Excelsior Avenue, police said.

Buschman is survived by his wife and 10-year-old daughter. The family has repeatedly declined to comment further about Buschman or the circumstances surrounding his death, except for an e-mail sent from his cousin Friday:

"On October 12, 2009, Eric Buschman was taken from us in front of his own home in San Francisco. A senseless crime that has now changed the lives of so many people. Eric Buschman was a son, husband, father, brother, uncle, coach, friend, and neighbor. Eric was an all around good guy. He always greeted you with a big smile and warm hug. He loved sports, the outdoors, his family, and all of his many, many friends. He will be missed dearly.

“In memory of Eric, a memorial has been set up to help his wife and daughter. We know that in these times many are struggling financially, so any amount you can contribute will be greatly appreciated.”

Donations can be sent to the Eric Buschman Memorial Fund c/o First National Bank, 975 El Camino Real, South San Francisco CA, 94080.
