Hit-and-run driver slams into man, young son on bike

SAN FRANCISCO — Andrew Bennett and his 4-year-old son were looking forward to a nice day at the California Academy of Sciences on Wednesday. Instead, they spent the day at what Bennett bitterly described as “the academy of triage and trauma at San Francisco General.”

The pair was riding north on Valencia Street, with Robby on a tandem device attached to his father’s bike. As they approached a green light at 18th Street, a woman driving a silver PT Cruiser “gunned through the intersection” against the red light and hit the front wheel of the bike.
Bennett hit the side of the car and he, his son and the bicycle landed about 20 feet away in the middle of the intersection, he said.

Despite the excruciating pain, what scared him most was the lack of sound coming from Robby.

“The silence after the accident was the scariest thing I’ve experienced in my life,” Bennett said. “I was screaming in agony and out of fear and concern for my son, but I couldn’t get up.”

It turned out Robby was nearly unscathed — his bicycle helmet split in two, he had some scratches on his elbow and he was terrified but OK. Bennett was not in as good shape, though. His spine was fractured and he could barely move.

The PT Cruiser, which police said was driven by a woman, fled the scene. Bennett said witnesses were able to catch the license plate number, but left before police began to investigate.

Bennett and police are asking anyone who witnessed the accident to come forward with information, and friends have been posting fliers around the intersection hoping for help.

“The bottom line here is I want the person to accept responsibility for what they’ve done,” Bennett said. “The point to me is this person recklessly endangered the lives of a 4-year-old child and a 42-year-old adult that were obeying the law.”

San Francisco’s police hit-and-run unit can be reached at (415) 553-1641.

Nothing New

Jul 2, 2009

Drivers do think they own the street and many times I've almost gotten run over while crossing with the light because some driver is only looking for cars, not pedestrians or bikers or anyone else. Their cars are moving forward but their head is turned in some other direction looking for oncoming traffic so they don't see people. And, god, I would never never never use one of those bikes with the attached baby/child cart behind it--the carts are too low down for some folks to see them and there's absolutely no protection for the child; those things are pain/suffer/sorrow just asking to happen. Sure, drivers ought to be more aware of pedestrians and bikers but they aren't--and we have more to lose (life- and limbwise) then the drivers do and they know it. I don't know why the police don't uphold the California law that the pedestrian has the right of way. I don't know how that driver can live with herself. Is killing someone worth the half second you save???

I'm sorry, but I would NEVER attach a small bicycle to the back of mine just to take my son for a ride! Let alone on Valencia. The father is a fool and is the one to blame. People on bikes, ESPECIALLY with another life to care for need to take a minute and wait to make sure THEY aren't crossing on a yellow, or to make sure the cross traffic has stopped. The man is a fool! AND, nothing new, a bicyclist isn't a PEDESTRIAN!

Greg,
You are the fool. We, my family and I, ride our bicycles the same way I drive my car: alertly and with consideration for others. I went through a GREEN light, not a yellow as you imply. The light had been green for about 5-10 seconds before I entered the intersection. The driver was not even at the intersection when her light turned red- she floored it through a red light. I don't run red lights, or jaywalk. Your defense of the driver shows your contempt for the rights of others. If our children grow up in a bubble they, like the driver of the PT Cruiser, will forget the fact that they are part of the world, not "a man as an island unto himself". If bicycle seats and trailer bikes (with safety flags) are so dangerous, why are they such good sellers after being extensively vetted by the Consumer Products Safety Commission? Go ahead, blame the victim. I guess my skirt was too short & I had it coming.

Andrew, Don't waste your time responding to people like Greg. The comments feature on this site has a predisposition to attract the craziest and most marginalized amongst us. You were clearly an innocent victim, a great parent, and let's just hope that the driver is caught and prosecuted fully.

Until SF becomes more accepting of bikes, its idiocy to ride with your small kids...tempting fate...BAD idea!

I imagine that far more children are injured and die in car crashes than in bicycle accidents. I find it disturbing that people would even think about blaming Andrew in this circumstance. Stories like this are important reminders to car drivers that we wield dangerous vehicles and need to respect all road users.

Good luck with your recovery Andrew, hope to see you and your kids back on the road soon.
