High-risk sex offender arrested in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO — A high-risk sex offender who cut off his Global Positioning System tracking device Wednesday was arrested this afternoon in San Francisco, Vallejo police said.
Joseph Vierra, 49, was taken into custody at 3:30 p.m. at O'Farrell and Polk streets by the California Department of Corrections and
Rehabilitation, Specialized Sex Offender Tracking Unit in cooperation with Vallejo police and the Solano County Sheriff's Office, Vallejo police said.
Vallejo police said Vierra was considered a threat to the community and had prior arrests and convictions for sex offenses against
children under age 14.
There was a warrant against him for violating his parole and within the last two years he absconded and was trying to solicit someone to find a child between ages 8 and 13, Vallejo police Sgt. Don Hendershot said.
Police believed he was in Vallejo, San Francisco or elsewhere in the Bay Area, Hendershot said.
Vierra has prior arrests for lewd acts on a child, false imprisonment, kidnapping, drug offenses and assault with intent to commit
rape, Hendershot said.
Vierra was sentenced to eight years in prison in 1985 and was required to register as a sex offender, Hendershot said.
Police did not release details of his arrest Monday afternoon.
