A Martinez man was arrested on suspicion of assault after he reportedly body-slammed a 27-year-old at a Cow Hollow bar early Sunday, critically injuring the victim, police Officer Albie Esparza said Monday.
Paul Bennett Riley, 22, was booked on charges of assault with a deadly weapon after he used the wrestling move on a man he had been arguing with, Esparza said. The two men were in a bar in the 1900 block of Union Street about 1 a.m. when the victim reportedly bumped into Riley, police said. The two men exchanged words and, as the victim attempted to walk away, Riley allegedly grabbed him and body-slammed him to the ground, knocking the victim unconscious.
The victim apparently landed on his face, Esparza said, and remains hospitalized in critical condition. He is reported to have suffered facial fractures and possible brain trauma.
The two men reportedly did not know each other before the incident, Esparza said.
Police said there were plenty of witnesses to the attack. Anyone with additional information on the attack is encouraged to contact police anonymously at (415) 575-4444 or by text message to TIP411.
