The extended family of a California Highway Patrol officer who was shot Tuesday morning on southbound Interstate 680 after a traffic stop was notified in the evening that the officer is in critical condition at a Walnut Creek hospital, a CHP spokeswoman said.

The officer, a seven-year veteran of the department out of the Contra Costa County area, was struck in a shootout about 8:30 a.m. in the Alamo area that left a suspect dead, CHP Sgt. Diana McDermott said.

CHP officers in patrol cars had pulled over a Jeep Wrangler just north of Livorna Road when the driver shot at the officer, Contra Costa County sheriff’s spokesman Jimmy Lee said.

A second officer then fired at the Jeep driver, hitting him.

McDermott said the wounded officer remained in critical condition as of 5 p.m. Tuesday.

The southbound lanes of I-680 where the shooting occurred were shut down for most of the day. Initially, northbound lanes also were shut down, but reopened about 1 p.m.
