Bike theft suspect facing Tour de Felonies

A man accused of serial bike thefts is facing 20 felony counts of receiving or buying stolen property, the district attorney announced Wednesday.

Irving Morales-Sanchez, an 18-year-old San Francisco resident, was arrested May 17 after the Police Department found 114 stolen bikes in his possession.

Some victims recognized their bikes on Craigslist and notified police, who then issued a search warrant. Police found eight of the bicycles at Morales-Sanchez’s home in the Silver Terrace neighborhood and an additional 106 bicycles at a storage unit in Oakland. The estimated value of the bicycles is more than $10,000.

“We have come a long way in making this city bicycle-friendly,” District Attorney George Gascón said. “I will
take a very serious stance against people who are stealing bikes and people who are in the market of selling stolen bikes.”

Police said burglaries and bicycle thefts in The City have decreased drastically since Morales-Sanchez was arrested. Police suspect multiple people were involved in the thefts.

Morales-Sanchez, who was arraigned Tuesday, is due back in court July 30 for his preliminary hearing.
