An El Cerrito man accused of fatally shooting another man inside a Polk Street coffee shop last year was ordered Monday to stand trial on a murder charge, prosecutors said today.

Jodie Daniels, 31, is accused of killing 29-year-old Terry Turner Jr. in a shooting that occurred around 4:20 p.m. on Jan. 13, 2011, inside Jebena Coffee and Tea Co. at 990 Polk St.

At the conclusion of a preliminary hearing that ended Monday, a San Francisco Superior Court judge ordered Daniels to stand trial on a murder charge, a firearm enhancement, and a count of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, district attorney’s office spokesman Alex Bastian said.

Daniels allegedly chased Turner past customers at the coffee shop, cornered him in a back room and shot him at least six times, Bastian said.

Police found Daniels at a home in San Francisco the next day and arrested him, and the coffee shop’s surveillance video footage of the incident was used as evidence during the preliminary hearing, according to Bastian.

The shooting apparently occurred after Turner stole Daniels’ laptop, according to Deputy Public Defender Adam Lipson, who is representing Daniels.

Daniels had initially been charged with robbery because witnesses saw him take a bag from Turner during the shooting, but the judge did not hold him to answer to that charge because the property was his, Lipson said.

He remains in custody in lieu of $2 million bail and will return to court on June 25 for formal arraignment on the charges, Bastian said.
