A driver was busted for allegedly fleeing a near-fatal collision with a pedestrian near the underpass of the Central Freeway on Monday, police said.

Craig Sheppard, 54, of San Francisco was booked on charges of felony hit-and-run and failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk after the accident at 13th and Mission streets. A 47-year-old woman is in criticalcondition.

Sheppard allegedly struck the woman while making a right turn onto 13th Street about 5:50 p.m., police Sgt. Daryl Fong said Tuesday. The woman was crossing on a green light and Sheppard turned on a red light, apparently trying to beat oncoming traffic, according to police and a witness.

The woman, who wasn’t identified, suffered head and leg trauma.

Based on information gathered at the scene, Sheppard was later pulled over and arrested in the Ingleside district, police said. He was not intoxicated.

The pickup truck paused after hitting the woman, a witness said. A horrified passer-by screamed from the sidewalk and ran to the victim’s side. Then the truck took off, the witness said.

“It was really a brutal hit-and-run,” said the witness, who wished to remain anonymous. “I grabbed a blanket from my trunk and put it on her.”

The victim was “conscious but disoriented and badly injured,” the witness said.
