A man accused of posing as a doctor and performing a dangerously cheap liposuction while smoking a cigar is set to appear in court this week on several felony charges.
Carlos Guzmangarza, 49, is accused of setting up a fraudulent medical practice in the Mission district and impersonating an actual physician’s assistant named Carlos Guzman. Guzmangarza claimed his Derma Clinic in the 2500 block of Mission Street was operated by himself and a doctor, but neither the doctor nor the assistant is affiliated with the clinic, prosecutors said.
Guzmangarza has no license to practice medicine, according to prosecutors.
A woman came to Guzmangarza’s clinic in early 2010 looking for liposuction in her abdomen and an eye lift after local doctors gave her much higher quotes for the procedures, according to prosecutors. Guzmangarza allegedly offered to perform the work for $3,000.
The surgery, prosecutors said, was extremely dicey.
During the operation at his office, prosecutors said Guzmangarza lit up a cigar and had the woman hold an IV bag.
A few days later, Guzmangarza came to her home with 6 pounds of fat he said was removed during the liposuction and dumped it down her toilet, prosecutors said.
The woman’s abdomen later became infected and she was forced to seek treatment from a real doctor, and that’s when she learned Guzmangarza was a fake, according to prosecutors. She eventually had corrective surgery.
Guzmangarza also treated the woman’s daughter with a series of facial injections for acne problems, prosecutors said.
Guzmangarza was arrested Thursday. He faces charges of practicing medicine without a license, assault with force likely to cause great bodily harm and battery for the procedures on the two alleged victims, false impersonation, identity theft and grand theft. If convicted on all counts, Guzmangarza could receive up to 12 years in prison.
