Albert Bartal, the Cal Fire firefighter who was run over by a murderous madman at a Geary Boulevard gas station, was moved to a new hospital Wednesday but remains in critical condition.
Bartal, 29, a single father from San Francisco, had been staying at San Francisco General Hospital since the horrific attack on Thanksgiving morning.
According to prosecutors, a rented sport utility vehicle driven by 22-year-old Eduardo Shaparo Esquivel plowed into Bartal at the Shell gas station at Geary and 9th Avenue.
Esquivel was allegedly hell-bent on delivering the last blow following a fight with Bartal at a Jack in the Box two blocks away.
Esquivel, of South San Francisco, has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and torture and is being held on $5 million bail. His girlfriend, Alyssa Tejada, 22, of Vallejo, was arrested Monday on charges that she tried to cover up the heinous crime, including ordering parts to fix the damaged SUV.
A relief fund has been established for Bartal, with donations being accepted at the San Francisco Police Credit Union. People may donate at the SFPCU at 2550 Irving St. The account number is 1379608.
Bartal worked as a seasonal firefighter for the past five years at the Saratoga Summit Fire Station in Santa Clara County, according to Capt. Jonathan Cox of Cal Fire. He also served as a Marine for four years and spent time in Iraq.
