A federal trial is beginning for two alleged MS-13 gang members accused in a fatal triple shooting in Daly City in 2009.

Prosecutors say Luis “Killer” Herrera and Danilo “Triste” Velasquez were members of San Francisco’s notorious 20th Street MS-13 clique, which has been accused of multiple murders and other acts of violence.

Herrera and Velasquez were arrested nearly five months after the Feb. 19, 2009, slaying of 21-year-old Moises Frias.

Frias and three other men were in a car stopped on John Daly Boulevard near the BART station when two men got out of another car and opened fire, police and prosecutors said.

Frias, a San Francisco Public Utilities Commission worker, was killed and two others injured in what police have called a case of mistaken identity.

Police said Herrera and Velasquez were out hunting for the gang’s archrivals, the Norteños, when they came upon Frias’ group, who were playing loud hip-hop music and wearing Norteño red but were not gang members.

Both men are charged with racketeering and conspiracy to commit murder, and Herrera also is charged with Frias’ murder.
