An injured hawk continued to evade rescuers this week, though new sightings of the bird are helping rescuers fine-tune their approach.

Wildlife emergency responders from the Monterey-based group WildRescue have been searching since Monday for a juvenile red-tailed hawk they believe was shot with a nail gun.

The team has had multiple sightings of the bird, most recently yesterday, at about 5 p.m., and received reports from other people who have spotted the hawk.

Those sightings are helping WildRescue learn more about the hawk and its routine, which will help the group capture the bird and get it to a treatment center.

“This is part of the capture — building a plan using sightings of the bird to help us predict its behavior and pattern. It’s very frustrating, but we just have to keep at it,” WildRescue director Rebecca Dmytryk said in a statement.

Rescuers need to lure the bird into a trap because they fear nets would tangle in the nail and injure the bird.

Dmytryk, her husband Duane Titus, and other volunteers planned to pick up the search again 11 a.m. Friday.

The group is also seeking information regarding the person who injured the hawk, a species protected under the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act.
