A jury Tuesday convicted a 59-year-old man of a brutal 2008 hammer attack on his estranged wife that left her with permanent injuries.

According to prosecutors, Steve Acosta went on a two-week rampage in April 2008 against Kimberley Celoni, stalking and threatening her, vandalizing her car and repeatedly beating her with a hammer at her Twin Peaks home.

Acosta’s attorney Floyd Andrews said the former dockworker had a drug addiction, began accusing Celoni of cheating on him, and moved out of the house before the attacks. Celoni suffered skull fractures and was permanently disfigured.

After a four-week trial, a jury Tuesday found Acosta guilty of 20 counts, including attempted murder, torture, aggravated mayhem, stalking, threats and violating a stay-away order. He’s now facing a life sentence.

Andrews did not dispute the horrific attacks, but claimed the trial was unnecessary, saying his client was willing to plead guilty to charges that would have kept him in prison until age 84, but prosecutors refused to cut a deal. Andrews said Acosta has hepatitis C and would be unlikely to live that long in prison.

“This was a vanity trial,” Andrews said. “There really wasn’t any point.”
