Suspected bank robber fatally shot by San Francisco police

A suspected bank robber who was shot by San Francisco police Tuesday evening near Buena Vista Park has died, according to police.

Officers responded at about 5:40 p.m. to the unit block of Buena Vista Ave East, which is between Haight Street and Duboce Ave, where they were trying to apprehend the bank robbery suspect, police spokesman Lt. Troy
Dangerfield said.

The male suspect attempted to flee, and Dangerfield said that officers fired and struck the suspect.

The man was transported with life-threatening injuries to a hospital, and police said that the man died sometime before 7:45 p.m.

Information about whether the suspect was armed was not yet available, Dangerfield said. The investigation is ongoing, and he said it was also unclear when the initial robbery occurred.

Police had closed off the area, including sidewalks, with police tape. At least five patrol cars had responded to the intersection as of 6:20 p.m.
