A 26-year-old woman was allegedly fatally stabbed by another woman during an argument in the street Monday in the Potrero Hill neighborhood, authorities said Tuesday.

According to police, the stabbing took place at a public housing development in the 1000 block of Connecticut Street about 11:30 a.m.

The victim was identified Tuesday by the Medical Examiner’s Office as Ernestine Herron, a San Francisco resident.

Police spokesman Lt. Troy Dangerfield said Herron argued with 48-year-old Maria Burgos, and Burgos allegedly grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed her in the neck. A witness described the knife as being 6 to 7 inches long, he said.

Herron was pronounced dead at the scene.

Burgos, who lives in the area, was arrested nearby a short time later, Dangerfield said. She was booked on suspicion of murder.

The cause of the argument is still being investigated, Dangerfield said.

A memorial had been set up Tuesday on the sidewalk near the site of the stabbing. It including candles, flowers, stuffed animals and vodka bottles.

Potrero Hill has been the scene of two other homicides in recent months, including the Jan. 30 fatal shooting of a 30-year-old man in the 900 block of Connecticut Street and the Feb. 26 fatal shooting of a 25-year-old man sitting in a parked car near Dakota and 23rd streets.

The stabbing is San Francisco’s 19th homicide this year, and the second in two days this week following about a month in which there were none.

Early Sunday morning, two men were shot during an argument among several people in a South of Market area parking lot. One of the victims, a 23-year-old Richmond man, died later at a hospital.

By this time last year, there were 12 homicides, according to police.
