A 21-year-old East Palo Alto man will spend at least 50 years in prison after being convicted of murder in a trial that ran into a delay because of discussion between a juror and a bailiff.
Jurors found Kevin Maldonado guilty Friday of first degree murder with use of a gun and attempted murder with use of a gun in the fatal shooting of one man and the wounding of a second man during an argument in East Palo Alto in September 2009.
San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe says Maldonado is facing 77 years to life in prison, with a minimum of 50 years when he's sentenced March 2.
Jurors had reached a verdict on Wednesday after deliberating for three days, but it was also revealed that a juror had talked to a bailiff about working together on a play.
When deliberations resumed with an alternate juror, Maldonado was convicted.
