Commission chairman to give report on animal issues

The chairman of the Commission on Animal Control and Welfare will give a report today on animal issues in San Francisco.

Chairman Richard Schulke’s report will include discussion of the anti-tethering bill recently signed into law by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. This law makes Californiathe first state in the country to outlaw the stationary chaining of dogs for more than a three-hour period.

The City’s Commission on Animal Control and Welfare meets today, at 5:30 p.m., at City Hall, Room 408.

St. Anthony foundation

Foundation to serve meal No. 33 million

The St. Anthony Foundation will serve its 33 millionth meal today. The foundation has been serving food to the homeless since Oct. 4, 1950. Spokeswoman Lisa O'Neill said the meal is expected to be served within the first 30 to 45 minutes of service, which starts at 10:30 a.m. The recipient of the special meal will get a personal hygiene kit, with shampoo, a toothbrush, toothpaste and other personal hygiene products. Meatloaf is on the menu.

District to celebrate after-school programs

The San Francisco Unified School District will participate in "Lights on After School," a national celebration of after-school programs. The day will start with a 9 a.m. breakfast at City Hall, co-hosted by the Department of Children, Youth and Their Families. Mayor Gavin Newsom is scheduled to attend, as is acting Superintendent Gwen Chan. Other, smaller events are planned at schools throughout The City during the day.
