San Francisco: Central: Financial District, Nob Hill, Chinatown, North Beach

Fatal fire: At 11:45 p.m. Nov. 18, officers were sent to a raging apartment fire in the 1200 block of Union Street. The building’s second floor was completely engulfed in flames and smoke, preventing rescue workers from helping an elderly, disabled women who was still in the building (she was later found dead). The woman’s husband said the blaze started when a piece of newspaper fell out of the fireplace, causing the rest of the apartment to ignite.

San Francisco: Taraval: Sunset, Parkside, portions of Golden Gate Park

On the mark:

Officers approaching a group of youths on the corner of Irving Street and Ninth Avenue at 8:19 p.m. Nov. 25 noticed one of them writing on a newsstand with a black marker. The suspect saw the officers, cursed and took off running toward Eighth Avenue, with officers in pursuit.

As the suspect turned south on Eighth Avenue, a good Samaritan on his way to pick up some take-out food saw the chase and pushed the suspect to the ground. Officers detained the suspect and arrested him on suspicion of malicious mischief and resisting arrest.

Keys to the crime:

Plainclothesmen responded to a report of a vehicle burglary Nov. 22 at 14th Avenue and Geary Boulevard. The vehicle belonged to a nearby business owner, who said keys to several other businesses he served were taken.

An investigation determined that the suspect was an ex-employee, so officers went to the suspect’s home to speak with him. The suspect admitted to taking the keys and then going to one of the other businesses and taking money.

He was arrested on suspicion of burglary, possession of stolen property and narcotics violations.

Was pot part of the ritual?:

At 8:16 p.m. Nov. 11, officers were dispatched to the area of Post and Jones streets regarding a man “with a sword.” After arriving, they heard on radio that other officers were detaining a suspect in possession of four large knives. The suspect claimed he was performing a ritual with the knives. Marijuana was also found in his jacket. He was arrested on suspicion of carrying a concealed weapon and possession of marijuana and narcotics paraphernalia.

‘Deep Thoughts,’ by Wack Slashy:

A victim reported to foot-patrol officers at 8:30 a.m. Nov. 8 that a woman had just slashed his car tires with a knife at 1018 Mission St. Officers discovered she had a parole warrant for her arrest.

While searching the suspect, an officer recovered a knife and a notebook in which she had written about various crimes she had committed in the neighborhood. The suspect’s most recent excerpt read, “I just went back and slashed all four of his tires!” She was arrested on her outstanding warrant and charged with vandalism.

Bad to worse, for less:

A woman waiting for a Muni bus at Eighth and Market streets at 12:40 p.m. Nov. 11 was approached by a man who asked her for change. After giving him some change, the suspect grabbed her wallet, punched her in the face and fled. While the victim called 911, she saw the suspect being chased by an unknown man. Officers were able to detain the suspect at Franklin and Fulton streets.

The victim said her wallet contained two $1 bills and a BART card, but officers found those three items and a $20 bill on the suspect. After further investigation, officers discovered that the extra $20 was taken from a customer at a Market Street liquor store, when the suspect was fleeing from the bus-stop incident, hence the later chase.

Can’t do the wash: A washing machine was reported stolen from the community laundry room on the 700 block of El Camino Real at 5 p.m. Nov. 13. The laundry room was flooded.

Rubbish overboard: A female on a boat anchored in the bay from the creek was dumping sewage in the water at 1:44 p.m. Nov. 13.
