Bay toll hikes considered

A public meeting will be held in San Mateo on Nov. 17 to discuss proposed toll hikes at all state-owned Bay Area bridges, including the Dumbarton, San Mateo-Hayward and Bay Bridge. The meeting will be held at San Mateo City Hall, 330 W. 20th Ave., at 6:30 p.m.

The increase, if approved, is expected to take effect July 1, 2010, according to the Bay Area Toll Authority. It is expected to raise an additional $160 million in annual revenues. Additional revenue is needed is to finance the estimated $750 million cost of necessary seismic retrofit projects on the Antioch and Dumbarton bridges, according to the authority.

The state agency said it has seen a steady decline in toll-paying traffic in the past five years, while facing increasing operational expenses.
