Workers are finished with repairs on the Bay Bridge’s cracked eyebar, a Caltrans spokesman said Tuesday.

Crews now are removing the temporary support system first put in place Labor Day weekend, when the cracked eyebar was discovered during a planned bridge closure, Caltrans spokesman Bart Ney said.

On Oct. 27, vibrations created in part by strong wind gusts caused the repair to crash onto rush-hour traffic, prompting a six-day closure for additional repairs.

Ney would not say when the supports would be completely removed, but he said it would happen within a matter of days. Lane closures — three of five on the upper deck and one on the lower deck — started Dec. 11, when the latest repairs commenced, and they clogged late-night commutes. But tonight, lanes were scheduled to be open through the holiday before Tuesday’s announcement.

Workers have been conducting daily inspections on the repaired segment. Caltrans has yet to determine the frequency of postrepair inspections, but Ney said the fix “will not require as much inspection.”

“It’s definitely not going to be daily; it may not even be weekly,” he said.
