Drunken driving charges were thrown at Raiders wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey on Thursday after the football player was intercepted by police last month speeding and weaving on the Bay Bridge, law enforcement officials said.

Heyward-Bey, 25, was pulled over by the California Highway Patrol about 2 a.m. April 7 while driving his 2012 Range Rover, Officer Tony Tam said.

He was given field sobriety tests, which he failed, Tam said. The traffic stop happened on the San Francisco side of the bridge, and prosecutors have charged him with two misdemeanors for drunken driving, District Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Stephanie Ong Stillman said.

The charges are for driving under the influence and driving with a blood alcohol content of 0.08 or more, Stillman said. Anything above 0.08 is considered drunken driving in California.

Heyward-Bey faces up to six months in jail, Stillman said.

The wide receiver, who authorities said has been cooperative, was a surprise first-round draft pick in 2009. He was the No. 7 selection and signed a five-year contract with Oakland worth $38 million.

He played for the University of Maryland in college, where he led the team in receptions each of his last three seasons, according to ESPN.com.

As a first-round draft pick, Heyward-Bey has had his share of criticism over his performance with the Raiders, but his stats have risen steadily the past three seasons.
