Mayor Jim Ruane and Assemblyman Jerry Hill will join Glenview neighborhood residents for the opening of the San Bruno Resource and Recovery Center to serve those affected by the gas pipeline explosion on Sep. 9, 2010.

The American Red Cross created the center, located at 458 San Mateo Ave. in downtown San Bruno, to provide ongoing and long-term support for the community, agency officials said.

“The American Red Cross wants to ensure that the San Bruno community not only recovers following last September’s disaster, but also that we all are working together to make the community stronger and more resilient to disaster in the future,” Harold Brooks, chief executive officer of the American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter, said in a statement.

The San Bruno Long-Term Recovery Committee, a collection of community agencies, will provide services at the center.

The center is designed to be a place where affected residents can meet with case managers, where support groups can gather, and where parents and teachers can learn how to help children still trying to cope with the disaster.

The center will offer classes in disaster preparedness, first aid, CPR and health education. It was made possible in part by a $100,000 donation by the Peninsula Health Care District.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. today.
