Man killed when he reportedly jumped in front of AC Transit bus

A pedestrian was killed in Oakland tonight when he apparently jumped in front of an AC Transit bus, an agency spokesman said.

Witnesses said the man intentionally leaped in front of the bus at about 6 p.m. in the 3600 block of Grand Avenue, near Mandana Boulevard, AC Transit spokesman Clarence Johnson said.

"It's very tragic, obviously," he said.

Several passengers were on board at the time, but no other injuries were reported, Johnson said.

He said the driver is being tested tonight for alcohol or drug use as a matter of policy.

"The driver was going a safe speed on a fairly well-lit street, and doing everything that by all accounts she should have been doing," Johnson said.

He said collisions with pedestrians are "extremely" traumatic for drivers.
