Toll collectors will become a thing of the past on the Golden Gate Bridge.

The Golden Gate Bridge District board of directors Friday accepted a recommendation by its Finance Committee and voted to eliminate the positions by 2012 and replace them with electronic devices.

By eliminating its 32 toll-collector, the bridge district will save $16 million over 10 years. The district is currently facing a five-year shortfall of $89 million.

Thursday’s vote at the Finance Committee passed by an 8-3 margin. Today’s measure was approved by a 13-2 count, with San Francisco Supervisor David Campos and local resident John Moylan the only dissenters.
