Young jazz bassists to compete at Kennedy Center

WASHINGTON — Three young jazz bassists — including one Washington native — will compete for top honors Sunday night at the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition at the Kennedy Center.
The competition will be followed by a gala concert featuring such luminaries as Herbie Hancock, Dianne Reeves, Wayne Shorter and Bobby McFerrin.
The three finalists are 26-year-old Matt Brewer, 24-year-old Ben Williams and 25-year-old Joe Sanders. Williams was born in Washington and attended the Duke Ellington School of the Arts.
The winner will receive a recording contract with Concord Records and a $20,000 scholarship. Scholarships of $10,000 and $5,000 will go to the other two finalists.
The evening begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Kennedy Center's Eisenhower Theater. Tickets start at $35.
