Lakeport voters overturn ban on fireworks sales

LAKEPORT, CALIF. — Fireworks will be available for sale again in Lakeport after voters overturned a city ban.

Lake County's second-largest city is the only place in the county where people can buy fireworks after Tuesday's vote. The measure to overturn the city's ban passed with 59 percent approval — or 514 votes.

The city had imposed the ban in June at the request of the fire chief, citing the fire danger.

But nonprofit groups, including the Clear Lake High School Booster Club, argued that fireworks sales account for a large part of their fundraising efforts.

Neighboring Mendocino County has completely banned fireworks sales, and Sonoma County only allows them in four cities.
