Former head of parents group sentenced to jail

REDWOOD CITY, CALIF. — The former head of a parents association for a Redwood City elementary school has been sentenced to a year in jail and ordered to pay restitution after being convicted of stealing from the group.

San Mateo County prosecutors say Rosendo Cazares Abarca was sentenced to a year in county jail Tuesday for embezzling $4,500 from a parents group at Fair Oaks Elementary School.

As part of a plea deal with prosecutors, Abarca pleaded no contest in July to one count of embezzlement.

Because the 39-year-old Abarca has received 345 days of credit for time served, he's expected to be released from jail within weeks.

As part of his sentence, Abarca will also be on three years probation.
