Violence mars holiday weekend, injures 10

Staff and wire reports
April 12, 2009

Easter weekend violence sent at least 10 people to the hospital in five separate incidents in The City.

Two men needed medical attention and a group of suspects was arrested after a stabbing in the Marina District Saturday, police said.
A physical altercation between a group of people ended with one victim receiving a stab wound to the left side of his stomach and another suffering heavy bruises.

The stabbing, reported at about 11:15 p.m. in the 1900 block of Lombard Street, doesn’t appear to have caused life-threatening injuries, police said.

Four separate shootings Sunday injured eight men but yielded no arrests. An assault around 4:40 p.m. at Harbor and Northridge roads in the Bayview neighborhood left a man suffering a gunshot wound, police said. The victim is expected to survive.

In another incident, around 9 a.m. Sunday a man was shot in the hand, hip and knee in the Western Addition, at McAllister and Fillmore streets. His injuries were considered non-life-threatening.

Two other shootings occurred within ten minutes of each other earlier Sunday morning, but were not thought to be connected. Two men suffered non life-threatening injuries in a drive-by shooting reported about 2 a.m. near the intersection of Mission Street and Excelsior Avenue, in the Excelsior neighborhood, according to police.

Another shooting, reported at 2:07 a.m. on the 500-block of Florida Street, in the Mission District, sent four men to the hospital: a 22-year-old, a 23-year-old, and two 29-year-olds, police said.

The suspect was described only as a man between 20 and 25 years old, police said.

Two of the men took themselves to San Francisco General Hospital, while the other two were taken to the hospital by ambulance.
