Victim's name released in suspicious Tenderloin death

Bay City News 9/6/08

SAN FRANCISCO – Authorities on Friday released the name of a man found dead under what police called suspicious circumstances last month in a Tenderloin hotel in San Francisco, in the hope that the man's family might contact them.

The man, 56-year-old Fidencio Salazar Jr., of San Francisco, was found dead of a stab wound about 2 a.m. on Aug. 15 inside a hotel at
Eighth and Market streets, according to police.

Despite ongoing attempts, "in this case, we may not be able to locate family," said Steve Gelman, administrator for the San Francisco
Medical Examiner's Office.

A victim's name is normally not released publicly until next-of-kin are notified.

"Maybe somebody will read about this individual, and it may trigger somebody to contact us," Gelman said said.

Officers were called to the area after a report of a fight in progress, but later determined the stabbing was unrelated, police said.

The case was initially called a homicide by police, and then called a suspicious death, which does not rule out suicide.

The Medical Examiner's Office later conducted an autopsy, the results of which have been, so far, inconclusive.
