Trial date coming for Cosco Busan pilot

Examiner Staff Report 10/6/08

John Cota, the pilot of the container ship Cosco Busan that rammed into the Bay Bridge on Nov. 7, will have his trial date selected today. The accident caused more than 50,000 gallons of oil to spill in the Bay and the deaths of approximately 2,000 birds. Cota’s attorney unsuccessfully argued at a recent hearing that the veteran ship pilot could not get a fair trial in The City. A U.S. district judge denied the request.
