Strategic timing in Newsom's race for governor

Mayor Gavin Newsom’s early entrance into the race for governor gives tiny window of opportunity to close the gap between him and his contenders, political analysts say.

Newsom’s announcement comes just before the Democratic convention is scheduled to take place in Sacramento, timing that will provide a springboard effect for his campaign, according to political consultant Jim Ross, who helped Newsom become mayor in 2003.

The early announcement was Newsom’s only choice politically because he is trailing in opinion polls and he has to make up as much ground as possible before everybody gets into the race, Ross said.

As for his chances, there’s always a chance, but “he has a big hill to climb,” Ross said.

USF political science professor Corey Cook said it’s too early to pick a winner but he called Newsom’s announcement a “bold” move. Many candidates without statewide experience will often play with the idea of running but settle for lesser office.

“His chances of winning depend entirely on the field,” Cook said. “I do applaud the mayor. Instead of just dipping his toe in the pool, he’s diving right in.”
