SAN FRANCISCO —
A new park and public wharf at the end of Brannan Street has received a much-needed funding boost, with $6 million tentatively earmarked in an upcoming federal budget, the Port of San Francisco said Tuesday.
Where: Waterfront between the Bay Bridge and AT&T Park
What: Demolition of all wooden structures associated with Pier 36 and construction of an 830-foot, lawn-covered wharf. A small-craft float will provide a mooring spot.
Why: The existing pier structure is rotting, unsafe and causes waterfront blight. The new wharf will provide parkland for a growing neighborhood.
When: Planning began in 2000. Most construction is expected to be finished as early as July 2012.
Who: Construction bids planned for late next year.
How much: $23.5 million to $27.5 million
How: Local and federal funds, sale of nearby land for condos.
