Slain mother was 'good person'

SAN FRANCISCO — A young mother was felled by bullets while socializing outside a public-housing complex in Potrero Hill on Saturday night, the latest in a rash of killings in San Francisco.
The victim was identified by the San Francisco medical examiner Sunday as 19-year-old Caprisha Green. Police say Green was shot about 10:25 p.m. in the 1000 block of Connecticut Street. She was rushed to San Francisco General Hospital where she was pronounced dead. Police have made no arrests in the case.
Green’s death marks The City’s 75th homicide. At the same point in 2007, there had been 80 killings in San Francisco. Last year, The City’s homicide rate was the highest it has been in a decade, with 98 cases reported. Police officials have pointed out this year, however, that overall crime is down and arrests are up in every other category other than homicides.
Nine people have been killed in San Francisco in the past three weeks, prompting police to increase patrols in the Mission district, which has borne the brunt of the violence. Supervisor Tom Ammiano, who represents the Mission, said some residents have complained that police are stationed only in front of trendy shops where there is little gang violence.
Green had been standing outside her apartment with a large group of people who were listening to music and drinking just before she was gunned down, neighbor Kisha Reab said.
Reab, 23, ran outside after hearing gunfire to find Green, her childhood friend, already dead. Reab, who did not witness the shooting, said she believes the bullet was meant for someone else.
“I think she was just an innocent bystander. It was probably some beef between guys and she happened to be standing outside,” Reab said.
Green, who had a 1-year-old daughter, lived with her mother, two brothers and a sister, Reab said. Green’s child was inside the apartment at the time of the shooting.
“She was a good person, a sweet person. She was a party person, she liked to have fun,” Reab said. “Her mom and her uncles and her grandpa raised me. I feel bad.”
