October 25, 2009

SANTA CRUZ — A wildfire burning northwest of Gilroy in the Santa Cruz Mountains has doubled in size this morning, according to a Cal Fire spokeswoman.

The fire started at about 3 a.m. and had burned 300 acres by 8 a.m., Cal Fire spokeswoman Colleen Baxter said. By about 9 a.m. some 600 acres were burned by Maymens Flat Road.

Mandatory evacuations were in effect for the Ormsby Cutoff area. Between 50 to 100 homes are threatened, she said. No structures had burned as of about 9:30 a.m.

Where the fire started is unclear.
