SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco medical examiner identified the victim of a fatal stabbing Monday night as 49-year-old San Francisco resident Eric Buschman.

Buschman was unloading his pickup truck in front of his home, near Excelsior Avenue and Athens Street, when a man came up to him and stabbed him, according to police.

The suspect is described as a “chubby” Hispanic man between 20 and 25 years old, standing 5 feet 4 inches and weighing 150 pounds. He was wearing a black, hooded sweatshirt and dark pants.

The man was last seen running from the area northbound on Athens Street and then west on Excelsior Avenue, police said.

Officers responded about 7:40 p.m. and located Buschman. Police are still searching for a motive, according to spokesman
Sgt. Wilfred Williams.

The killing marks the 39th homicide in The City this year. Buschman’s family, reached at his home, declined to comment.

My heart goes out to the wife, daughter and family. As a concerned neighbor, I, along with many others witnessed this tragedy. I find it so saddening that such good people have had their lives usurped by this random act of brutality. The Excelsior has long been a family-oriented neighborhood and these random acts of violence carried out by selfish cowards needs to stop. To the man who did this - we're watching you...

So sick. This one hits particularly close to home for me because he was my age, lived in his neighborhood as long as I have, and was doing something I do all the time (unload camping gear out of my car at night after coming back from a trip). I get approached by all sorts of drunks and dirtbags when I'm putting my gear in the house, but from now on, I will be armed when I do so. We - all of us San Franciscans - should be deeply ashamed of what we have allowed this once great city to degenerate into. One has to wonder how many more senseless murders it is going to take before we start making some noise.

I am stunned by this news because when I attended Sacramento State in the 1980's one of my dorm roommates for a semester was named Eric Buschman who was from San Francisco. He was a friendly outgoing person who loved the Greatful Dead. My condolences to Eric's family and friends. Rest in Peace Eric.
