SAN FRANCISCO — A human leg discovered sticking out of the dirt at McLaren Park Monday morning was attached to a body that had been buried in a shallow grave, investigators said.

A Rec and Park cleanup crew discovered the leg while cleaning up a homeless encampment in a small, wooded basin near the Gleneagles Golf Course, according to San Francisco police Sgt. Wilfred Williams. When they pulled back a piece of a blue tarp it revealed a leg, from the thigh down, protruding from the ground,

It was later discovered the leg was attached to a body that had been buried in a shallow grave. At 9 p.m. Monday night an investigator in the San Francisco Medical Examiner’s office said the body had been excavated but could not provide more details.

It was also unclear how long the remains had been there, though the site had begun to smell bad, he said.  Williams did not know whether the leg was clothed or not, or what gender or race the victim may have been.

The homicide unit was handling the investigation, but it was too soon to say Monday evening whether the person died of natural or unnatural causes, Williams said.

Another great example of why McLaren PArk needs a better trail system that appeals to contemporary users like runners, bikers and hikers.

More Users = Safer, better maintained open space

Not to mention it promotes a healthy lifestyle and creates youth opportunities to play in nature.

Now more than ever I support what SF Urban Riders is trying to do!

Sf Urban Riders may mean well, but they have actually destroyed a lot of the park by hatching in trails themselves instead of getting folks involved with the Rec. and Park Dept. and doing things sustainably. It is Rec. and Park that should be supported with the volunteers that in August, are coming to do just that: build trails that respect the park.

Why not just blame the dead body on SF Urban Riders too?

It does not seem that much below you (Gardener) to do so.

SF Urban Riders has NEVER built any trails in McLAren PArk.
The trails that exist in the area are 'Social Trails' that formed over the last 30 years under the watchful eye of the same land manager ( SFRPD) you so applaud.
The Trails have be easily seen on Google Earth for over a decade.

I think finding a dead body that has been lying in the brush for over a year pretty much sums up the situation. SFRPD does not do a very good job stewarding or maintaining McLaren PArk even after 10 years of the Natural Area Program management Plan.

The Park clearly needs more healthy, contemporary recreation..... And Bikes are the Answer !

Gardener - i know you may mean well in what you try and say, but it does come off like you are a Bike Hater.

From what I hear SF Urban Riders has been the ones proactively courting SFRPD - but some in the parks and recreation department are leary of letting anyone use the open space of the park for fear of destroying the habitat.

t is pretty obvious and well documented that in a dense Urban Environment you can only protect natural assets if Recreation and Restoration work in unison.

One can only draw parallels to the story of Colonnade in Seattle - open space once frequented by drug addicts and criminals turns into a bike park- goodbye crime, hello community amenity

For some reason this thread has become about SF Urban Riders and not about the real issue that the "body in the park" points out: When our parks aren't maintained and utilized they become a bastion for drug use, homeless encampments and in this case, a burial ground.

Groups like SF Urban Riders who are working WITH SF Rec and Park, and Friends of Mclaren, should be commended for giving of their own personal and family time to help create multi-use trails for hikers, bikers, and nature lovers alike. If each user group supports the other we'll solve the issue above and many others.

Interesting comments.
I am with the majority here. Bringing groups that will volunteer into areas with problems really helps clean things up. I remember the area of GG park that is now the frisbee golf course. It used to be littered with garbage, bottles, and needles. Now it is well maintained and offers recreation for a huge number of residents.
Having a group help maintain McLaren can only be beneficial. Additionally if it is a bike group it will provide a new recreational area not yet available in San Francisco which is a win-win for everyone.
I vote for less dead bodies and more fun stuff!
