SAN FRANCISCO — A proposal by the mayor to add a per-pack fee to cigarettes sold in San Francisco was approved unanimously by the Board of Supervisors Budget and Finance Committee. The ordinance, which is expected to receive full board approval, would boost the cost of a pack by 33 cents starting Oct. 1. Newsom said the fee will help The City’s budget and offset the cost incurred to clean up butts.

WITH EVERY THING ELSE IN SAN FRANCISCO BEING SO EXPENSIVE, I GUESS I WILL BE DRIVING OUT OF THE CITY TO BUY MY CIGS AND EVERYTHING ELSE WHILE I'M AT IT.

MAYBE THEY SHOULD ALSO RAISE TAXES ON GUM WHILE THEY ARE AT IT. I'M SURE MORE PEOPLE WILL START CHEWING IT TO REPLACE THE CIGARETTES THEY CAN'T AFFORD AND WILL START THROWING IT ON THE GOUND INSTEAD OF THERE CIGARETTE BUTTS.

One more reason that I will continue to do all my shopping in San Mateo County. It is one of the best ways to deny revenue to the bottomless pit known as the SF Budget. Say bye-bye to my sales taxes City & County of San Francisco

With all due respect, current smokers are like little children being told they can't put their hand in the fire. Insolent little brats - you know it's bad for you, you know it's bad for the people around you, you know it costs you, your family and the supporting gov't when it comes time to care for your health and you know it will kill you eventually. Yet ya'll still light up and act all indignant because the gov't was forced to come to your rescue because you're not smart enough to save yourself.

Classic. In the column of reasons of what's wrong with America, this one is right up there.

I think to be honest people just need to be realistic and understand that we all just have to chip in to keep the city going. Yeah I know poor spending put us here but I don't see anybody running for local positions and doing a better job.

And an excellent point is the cost of street clean-up. maybe smokers should team up and all throw away their cigarette butts so this argument wouldn't be valid

Lets start taxing everything, alchohol because that is killing people also and people who are innocent too, fast food because that is killing people and there children, let also get rid of all prescribtion drugs and over the counter while we are at it. Maybe we should all live in a bubble!
