Newsom heads from honeymoon to Denver

Staff Report 8/20/08

SAN FRANCISCO – Mayor Gavin Newsom’s two week-honeymoon with new wife Jennifer Seibel has come to an end, but he won’t be staying in The City for very long.

After returning to City Hall on Thursday, the Mayor – and gubernatorial hopeful -- will re- pack his bags and head to Denver where the Democratic National Convention is set to begin Monday.

There, Newsom will get a chance to connect with young voters on Wednesday, as he’s hosting an evening of indie rock at a local venue.  The event is billed as “Unconventional ’08,” to honor “Generation Obama.”

The party lineup includes alternative rock artists Clap Your Hands And Say Yeah, Nada Surf and DJ Z-Trip.

Hopefully, the festivities won’t keep Newsom up too late: the next morning he is scheduled to speak at the California delegation breakfast with Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, another politico rumored to have set his sites on the governor’s job.

Several staffers from Newsom’s exploratory committee for California governor, including chief strategist Eric Jaye, are also attending the convention.

Other elected city officials expected to take the week off for a few days of networking, repositioning and partying include District Attorney Kamala Harris and City Attorney Dennis Herrera.
