Susan Alexander, the NYC Friars Club roaster, is hosting “5 Funny Females,” a variety of female comedians from New York City, Boston and San Francisco at the Purple Onion this weekend.
Why are you only including women? When I started standup in San Francisco, I actually had this as a monthly show and I noticed that in a lot of the showcases it was rare to have more than two female comics. A lot of people have the misconception, “Oh, the ladies are coming to the stage now.” But it’s not like that. We have to earn your laugh.
Are women funnier? I don’t think women or men are funnier. The women stick out because they’re fewer of them doing it. There are some not-funny women, I won’t put them on. I think people think they’re just going to bash men. ... That’s so 20 years ago.
How do you pick them? From a hat. I’m just kidding. I purposely mix pros with some up-and-coming talent. I try to have a mix. You also have to make me laugh. In 60 seconds, I can kind of tell. I do try to get new female comics so you as an audience don’t get bored.
Tell us why we’re better than New York. I love San Francisco because it’s so politically correct. If you can make San Francisco audiences laugh, you can make anybody laugh anywhere. Some people think “Oh, San Francisco’s too smart, too liberal.” But no, you want that so you can develop your jokes.
