Letter carrier collapses, dies delivering mail

SAN FRANCISCO — A male letter carrier apparently had a heart attack and fell out of his vehicle, which then plowed into a parked car in the Richmond district Monday afternoon.
U.S. Postal Service spokesman James Wigdel confirmed that a letter carrier died while delivering mail, but he would not provide the person’s name or comment further on the incident until the family was notified.
San Francisco police spokeswoman Lt. Lyn Tomioka said police received a call at 4:43 p.m. that a postal worker was injured at 21st Avenue and Clement Street. She said the man died, but he did not appear to be injured from the fall.
Albert Levy, a witness who owns Aladdin Rugs at 21st Avenue and Clement Street, reportedly said the truck kept traveling after the carrier fell out. He said the truck traveled about half a block on the wrong side of the street before crashing into a parked minivan.
Levy said he did not know the man.
“He was not our regular mailman,” Levy said.
