The PETA campaigner organized a protest scheduled for noon today at 600 Van Ness Ave., where two PETA “chicks” in red bikinis will be crammed together in a tank of “bloody” water with the message “McDonald’s Scalds Chicks; to Death.”

What prompted this demonstration? PETA’s McCruelty campaign is aimed at pushing McDonald’s to eliminate the worst abuses of chickens killed for its restaurants. Chickens killed by McDonald’s suppliers suffer broken wings and legs and are often scalded to death — hence the giant “scalding tank” at [today’s] demonstration.

Is there a more humane way to slaughter chickens than McDonald’s method? A more humane slaughter method called controlled-atmosphere killing ensures that animals are killed painlessly while still in their transport crates before they have their throats cut or are handled by workers.

Do you expect police to show up at the protest? We would only expect to see the police if they were interested in learning more about McDonald’s suppliers’ cruelty to animals because we contact the city in advance to make sure that we have any necessary permissions or permits.

Is this protest planned for other cities? People are demonstrating all over the country. San Francisco is seeing quite a lot of the excitement because our “McCruelty: I’m Hatin’ It” billboard is up at Sixth and Brannan [streets] as of [today].

I'm glad PETA is raising awareness about this issue. Hopefully McDonald's will do the right thing and switch to the less cruel method of slaughter.
