Road flares used to set Pink Triangle fire

Wire reports
June 28, 2009

SAN FRANCISCO —  Authorities are trying to determine who set fire to a large, fabric pink triangle constructed each year as part of San Francisco’s gay pride celebration.

San Francisco police say road flares were used to char a section of the triangle.

The blaze was reported at about 5 a.m. near Christmas Tree Point Road and was extinguished about 30 minutes later. A 25-by-30 foot area was damaged, she said.

A pink triangle is an important symbol of the gay rights movement – it was originally used in Nazi concentration camps to identify gay men during World War II.

The pink triangle is perched atop of Twin Peaks, the highest point in San Francisco, every year during gay pride weekend. More information about it can be found at: http://www.thepinktriangle.com/.
