GreenPeace field organizer calls for day of action

SAN FRANCISCO — Lauren Thorpe, the field organizer for GreenPeace has helped organize 350.org’s International Day of Climate Action events on Saturday, which has organized events in San Francisco and across the globe to speak out about climate change.

What is 350.org? 350.org is an organization that created this Web site and this call to action, where they said, on Oct. 24, we need you to mobilize in your community around this number 350, which represents the safe level of carbon in the atmosphere — 350 parts per million. Right now, we’re at 390 parts per million.

So what’s happening on Saturday? There are about 4,000 events happening in more than 170 countries. It’s turning out to be one of the largest days of political action ever organized. They’re basically missing 20 countries in the world that aren’t going to be participating. Of the thousands of events going on, we’re expecting ours in San Francisco to be the largest.

How with the local event conclude? We’re all meeting at the park across from the Ferry Building at 3 p.m. We’re going to have a lot of speakers and a lot of performers. Around 3:30 or 3:50 p.m. we’re going to have a massive aerial image taken, where all the people there spell out “350”. That photo will be sent to 350.org, and that will be projected onto the JumboTron in New York City.

Why do all this? Basically, we really need to show that people are ready for real solutions to global warming, and we don’t want the same old politics anymore.
