Life of man found dead on bus torn apart by drugs, crime

SAN FRANCISCO — Warm weather and an impressive skateboard scene lured Christopher Feasel to San Francisco, but he stumbled into drug addiction and homelessness before turning up dead on a parked Muni bus.

A cleaning crew discovered Feasel around midnight Friday aboard a 5-Fulton that had been parked since 6:30 p.m. after completing a rush-hour shift, Municipal Transportation Agency spokesman Judson True said.

An autopsy was scheduled Monday for the 37-year-old San Francisco resident, who had no fixed address at the time of his death, but the cause may not be known for weeks. The body showed no sign of trauma, according to police.

Feasel’s ex-wife, Oregon resident DeDee Peterson, said Monday she had not been in contact with Feasel for more than 10 years.

“Addiction is the reason we separated, and he struggled with that,” Peterson said. “Before drugs he was an amazing, amazing person. And we were in San Francisco when he really started using drugs and it completely changed his life.”

Feasel grew up in Michigan and Massachusetts, the child of supportive and loving parents, she said. Peterson described him as very intelligent and said he majored in sociology and anthropology at the University of North Carolina,
Wilmington.

He joined friends in the Bay Area while in his early 20s and Peterson moved there soon afterward. The couple, who met on the East Coast, were married for six months before separating, Peterson said.

“It was heartbreaking when this happened to us. We were best friends and when he started using, he was a horrible addict,” she said. “My heart has been heavy about this. I knew I would get this phone call.”

Feasel’s addiction to drugs spurred a criminal record stretching through the past 12 years.

In San Mateo County, Feasel had three convictions from 1997 — two for misdemeanor domestic violence and one for misdemeanor hit and run. He served 30 days on the first domestic violence charge and a year in San Mateo County Jail on the second, Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.

In San Francisco, Feasel had been arrested four other times in the past two years on suspicion of possession of crack-cocaine and misdemeanor shoplifting. Those charges were dismissed, Assistant District Attorney Brian Buckelew said.

One week before his body was discovered, a San Francisco judge sentenced Feasel to three years of probation for a second-degree
burglary conviction. He had been in jail since his May 30 arrest, Buckelew said.

Investigation aims to uncover circumstances of man’s death

The circumstances surrounding the death of a San Francisco man found in the back of a Muni bus last weekend remain something of a mystery to authorities.

Police were reviewing surveillance footage to determine whether the body of 37-year-old Christopher Feasel went unnoticed on the bus during the evening commute or if Feasel broke into the secured Muni yard at 949 Presidio Ave. and died aboard the parked vehicle.

Drivers are expected to walk through and check a vehicle at the end of their shift, Muni spokesman Judson True said.

Transit officials have interviewed the driver of the 5-Fulton bus where Feasel was found, he said.

Whether the driver conducted a walk-through of the bus will be determined by an ongoing Police Department investigation, True said.

Really nice of the ex-wife to share Christopher's struggles and shame.

What a relief to the welfare rolls! Now they (bureaucrats and apologists) can find someone else to abuse the system.

Atomic, it's my sincere hope that you are gutted with a rusty switchblade on the streets of San Francisco, in full view of your wife, husband, children or (and I'm just dreaming here) your parents.

Sadened

Christopher was a human being. He did struggle, but was loved by many, his ex wife was, and is in just as much shock and sadness by all of this. She loved Chris very much. She was caught off guard by the phone call from the Examiner. Her intention was not to bash or shame him in any way, but to bring a human element to his story. Ms. Peterson's comment was that he was an amazing man sober. Anyone who doesn’t know the real story should think before commenting and really look at all of the charges. Addiction does not choose socioeconomic background, or culture. When we see someone who is homeless we need to remember there is a reason, proximal cause, one pivotal moment in time that changed this person’s life whether it be addiction, the loss of a job, or mental health demise. We all belong to this human race.

How sad

Oct 21, 2009

In my opinion Ms Peterson was not bashing anyone. To say so is not seeing the whole story (which is from what I read very sad),and only causes more pain to someone who is already heartbroken by this. I am sure Ms Peterson was in shock when she received that phone call from a reporter who began asking questions when she knew nothing of Chistopher's death. Ms Peterson said nothing about criminal records. That came from the District Attourney's Office. Anyone read domestic violence in those charges? What about Ms Peterson's feelings? Her life was changed by all of this too. When I read this article I was sad for both of them. "Sadened" is correct. We all belong to this human race, and no one has the right to judge.

How many millions dollars does the City of SF spend on drug addicts and on the programs to help them get off drugs. Stories like this show that this City can't get a handle on this problem. People are dying on the streets. It's time for the Board of Supervisor to re-examined and audit which of the drug treatment programs are working and which ones are not.

Stop wasting the City's time and money on issues of the world and concentrate in helping the people of SF. The $150K the City of SF sent to Indoneasia and the Philipines is not helping anyone living day to day here in SF!

Ex-Wife

I did not mean to bash Chris in any way, I once loved him. However, if my openness saves even one person, one couple who are in love, one family on the brink of catastrophe, than the story needed to be shared. Let the shame be on those who judge.

Very sad

Ex-wife--Your comments make it clear Chris was a person with potential and good in him. Without your comments, we would simply be reading about his criminal record and death.

Ms. Peterson is a close friend and I know how much she loved Chris before addiction changed him. She is right to say that if this story saves one soul from the bondage of addiction, then it was worth sharing. Being judgemental about either Chris or his ex-wife serve no purpose to anyone! Hear the story, understand the agony and bondage of addiction and vow never to go there and help anyone who is there(addicted)to get out of that lifestyle! It is not our place to be judgemental toward either of them.

Chris was a good guy with a good heart. He unfortunately didn't know how to channel his extraordinary energy in more positive ways.

Keep It Simple

The media is prowling for news not for telling some wonderful recount of a person.

You don't roll out someone close to you for purposes of a deadline and entertainment.

I work on that lot as a part of the workfare program, and being aware of what people on that line do, I hope Atomic is stabbed by a crackhead with a knife paid for with his tax dollars thru General Assistance. Why don't you share your opinion with the panhandlers or drug addicts on the street as opposed to hiding behind a screen name with your classist hatred?
